Accounting Expert at Mercor

Accounting Expert | $56–154/hr | Part-Time (10–20 hrs/week) | US Remote

Mercor is hiring on behalf of a leading AI research and product lab that is redefining how advanced reasoning systems interact with data, automation, and real-world decision-making. We are seeking an Accounting Expert to support the lab's growing financial operations—ensuring precision, compliance, and scalable processes as the company continues to expand. This is a part-time hourly contract through Mercor, ideal for a seasoned accounting professional who thrives in dynamic, innovation-driven environments.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the accounting cycle: journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and monthly close
• Prepare and maintain financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow) to inform leadership decisions
• Track budgets and forecasts, performing detailed variance and trend analysis
• Manage accounts payable and receivable, expense reimbursements, and vendor relationships
• Develop and enforce accounting policies and internal control systems tailored to a scaling AI startup
• Collaborate with external auditors, tax advisors, and finance consultants to ensure compliance and accuracy
• Implement automation and system improvements to streamline financial reporting and data integrations
• Advise leadership on financial process optimization, cost structure, and operational efficiency

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional accounting or controllership experience
• Professional certification (CPA, CA, ACCA, or equivalent) strongly preferred
• Proven experience in tech or AI-focused startups, or high-growth environments
• Advanced knowledge of GAAP or IFRS, reconciliations, and financial reporting standards
• Proficiency with cloud-based accounting tools (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite) and Excel/Sheets
• Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret complex data clearly
• Exceptional attention to detail, reliability, and organizational skills
• Comfortable working independently and communicating effectively across remote teams
