AI Training Specialist – Physics | Contractor | Fully Remote | 20–40 hrs/week

Turing is looking for a highly analytical, computationally skilled physicist to help train and evaluate frontier AI models. In this role, you will design research-grade computational physics problems, develop rigorous solutions in Python, and assess AI model performance — directly contributing to the advancement of cutting-edge large language models.

About Turing

Based in San Francisco, Turing is the world's leading research accelerator for frontier AI labs and a trusted partner for global enterprises deploying advanced AI systems. Turing supports customers by accelerating frontier research with high-quality data, advanced training pipelines, and top AI researchers specializing in coding, reasoning, STEM, multilinguality, multimodality, and agents.

Key Responsibilities

Problem Design & Solutioning

  • Develop original, research-grade or graduate-level computational physics problems using Python.
  • Source novel algorithms, edge cases, and realistic constraints from top-tier scientific literature — not standard textbooks.
  • Write clear, jargon-free problem prompts that challenge AI models to identify the correct scientific method independently.
  • Structure and validate problems and solutions using Google Colab.
  • Define problem categories, tags, and difficulty levels.
  • Rigorously solve formulated problems, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and logical coherence.
  • Design robust test cases and validation suites to verify solutions and evaluate AI model outputs.
  • Analyze model gaps, failures, and improvement opportunities across multiple AI systems.

Quality Assurance & Collaboration

  • Participate in two-tier peer reviews, evaluating both problem accuracy and solution quality.
  • Collaborate with reviewers and team leads, proactively incorporating feedback to refine and improve content.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or PhD candidate in Computational Physics, Theoretical Physics, Condensed Matter, Nuclear Physics, Astrophysics/Cosmology, Statistical Physics, Quantum Information, or Biophysics with coding experience.
  • At least one peer-reviewed publication.
  • Proficiency in Python for scientific computing.
  • Familiarity with Google Colab for structuring and running scientific notebooks.
  • Strong analytical, logical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Engagement Details

  • Type: Contractor/Freelancer (no medical or paid leave)
  • Commitment: Minimum 20 hrs/week (options: 20, 30, or 40 hrs/week); at least 4 hrs/day with 4-hour overlap with PST
  • Duration: 2-month contract with potential for extension
  • Start Date: Expected next week

Perks

  • Fully remote work environment.
  • Opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge AI research with leading LLM companies.
  • Potential for contract extension based on performance and project needs.
