Biology Subject-Matter Expert (Contract, Remote)

Location: Worldwide (Remote)
Seniority: Senior level
Employment type: Contract

The role

We’re looking for a seasoned Biology expert to consult on AI training data projects for leading model builders and enterprise teams. You’ll define “what good looks like,” review complex outputs, and guide teams to deliver accurate, domain-specific annotated datasets—on time and to exacting technical standards. Engagements are scoped with clear deliverables, milestones, and end dates.

What you’ll do

Standards, QA, and continuous improvement

  • Set domain-specific quality metrics and acceptance criteria.

  • Develop project SOPs, QA rubrics, and reference packs aligned to client standards.

  • Review annotations/classifications/metadata; flag and correct defects pre-delivery.

  • Run structured QA on daily/weekly drops; track issues to closure against deadlines.

  • Write precise remediation notes and handle spec changes and edge cases.

  • Curate “gold standard” examples to calibrate contributors and ensure consistency.

Talent vetting & output uplift

  • Assess technical contractor candidates via sample reviews and knowledge checks.

  • Provide crisp, actionable feedback on sample work.

  • Create targeted training and calibration materials (nomenclature, ambiguity handling, formatting).

Project delivery & insights

  • Advise on technical scoping, reference sources, and quality thresholds.

  • Unblock teams on edge cases and evolving specs throughout the lifecycle.

  • Build lightweight dashboards/trackers for defect categories and recurrence.

  • Lead post-mortems; analyze trends and recommend process or training updates.

  • Summarize client/model observations (e.g., misclassification patterns, knowledge gaps).

Example domains & tasks (you won’t do all of these, but depth in several is ideal)

  • Molecular Biology: DNA/RNA sequence generation and correction

  • Genetics/Genomics: Variant calling, CRISPR modeling, gene editing simulation

  • Bioinformatics: Pipeline validation, FASTA/FASTQ parsing

  • Cell Biology: Organelle identification, diagram labeling, mitosis modeling

  • Microbiology: Bacterial strain classification, disease mechanism support

  • Virology: Lifecycle modeling, pathogen mapping

  • Neurobiology: Neuron signaling diagramming, brain region identification

  • Immunology: Antibody interaction simulation, immune response modeling

  • Developmental Biology: Timeline modeling, embryo stage reasoning

  • Evolutionary Biology: Phylogenetic trees, trait tracing

  • Systems Biology: Pathway modeling, protein interaction networks

  • Biotech/Biochemistry: Enzyme reaction prediction, lab technique simulations

What you’ll bring

  • PhD in Biology, Bioinformatics, or closely related field (or equivalent research/industry impact).

  • 5+ years of professional experience in advanced biology domains.

  • Proven record of setting and enforcing high technical standards.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication; clear, concise technical guidance.

  • Experience creating SOPs, rubrics, and training resources.

  • Disciplined documentation, high attention to detail, and consistency under deadlines.

  • Fluency in English (additional languages a plus).

Contract & compensation

  • Rate: USD $25–$100 per hour, based on experience, expertise, and location.

  • Status: Independent contractor; you provide a secure computer and high-speed internet.

  • Benefits: Company-sponsored benefits (e.g., health insurance, PTO) do not apply.

How to apply

Share your CV or LinkedIn and briefly highlight:

  • Your core biology sub-domains and relevant project examples.

  • Experience with data annotation/QA or model-adjacent workflows.

  • Typical availability (hours/week) and your desired hourly rate (USD).
