Chemistry Specialist | Contractor | Worldwide Remote | 8-Week Engagement

Turing is seeking a skilled Chemistry Specialist to design and develop high-quality chemistry reasoning datasets that evaluate and enhance the scientific reasoning capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs). This is a fully remote freelance opportunity with a leading AI research accelerator based in San Francisco, CA.

About Turing

Turing is the world's leading research accelerator for frontier AI labs and a trusted partner for global enterprises deploying advanced AI systems. We help accelerate frontier research with high-quality data, advanced training pipelines, and top AI researchers specializing in coding, reasoning, STEM, multilinguality, multimodality, and agents.

Role Overview

As a Chemical Reasoning & Discovery Engineer, you will create rigorous, reproducible chemistry-centered evaluation tasks that challenge LLMs to analyze experimental data, identify chemical relationships, infer reaction rules, estimate parameters, and predict outcomes under varying conditions.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Design chemistry-based reasoning scenarios using experimental results, molecular data, and simulated chemical systems.
  • Author multi-step tasks involving reaction analysis, chemical property inference, parameter estimation, and predictive reasoning.
  • Develop evaluation problems focused on pattern discovery, reaction mechanisms, model selection, and scientific consistency checks.
  • Create deterministic solutions, reference explanations, and detailed scoring rubrics for model assessment.
  • Collaborate with reviewers and LLM engineers to ensure scientific accuracy, clarity, and reproducibility across datasets.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in chemistry, chemical research, scientific computing, laboratory analysis, or related analytical fields.
  • Strong knowledge of chemical principles, scientific reasoning, quantitative modeling, and data interpretation.
  • Expertise in experimental design, reaction mechanisms, stoichiometry, thermodynamics, kinetics, or simulation-based analysis.
  • Ability to communicate complex chemical concepts clearly through structured documentation.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, logical consistency, and commitment to reproducible outcomes.

Engagement Details

  • Type: Contractor/Freelancer (no medical or paid leave benefits)
  • Duration: 8 weeks
  • Overlap Required: 4 hours with Pacific Standard Time (PST)

Perks

  • Fully remote work environment.
  • Opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge AI projects with leading LLM companies.
  • Potential for contract extension based on performance and project needs.
