Design Critic | $50–70/hr | Remote (US, Canada, Europe, Australia, NZ, Brazil)
Mercor is seeking experienced Design Critics to evaluate, critique, and shape how AI systems interpret and analyze visual design across mediums. This is a part-time, asynchronous role running 10–20 hours per week, with potential for increased hours based on performance.
About the Role
This position is ideal for professionals with backgrounds in visual arts, art history, design criticism, visual journalism, or theory-forward design practice who are passionate about interrogating aesthetics, composition, and visual reasoning. You will collaborate asynchronously with a cross-disciplinary team of designers to craft, critique, and review experimental design workflows using frontier AI models.
Key Responsibilities

- Provide written and verbal critical analysis of visual work across mediums

Qualifications
- 1+ years of professional experience in a visual, critique-based, or design-adjacent field
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field, including: Art History, Visual Arts, Graphic Design, Design Theory, Architecture, Visual Culture Studies, Film & Media Studies, Illustration, Editorial Design, or Journalism (with a visual/arts focus)
- Experience writing or speaking critically about visual work (e.g., reviews, essays, critiques, editorial analysis, academic writing)
- Exposure to LLMs, generative AI prompting, and vibe coding
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent attention to detail
- Currently based in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, or Brazil
