Domain Expert – Legal (Lexis+) at Mercor

Domain Expert – Legal (Lexis+ Research) | $76–$120/hr | Worldwide Remote

Mercor is seeking a seasoned legal professional with deep, hands-on expertise in Lexis+ to serve as a Domain Expert. In this role, you will evaluate and validate AI-generated legal research outputs, ensuring accuracy, currency, and proper citation across cases, statutes, and regulations. This is a flexible contractor engagement billed hourly, ideal for practicing attorneys, law librarians, or experienced legal researchers.

Key Responsibilities

• Verify that every cited case, statute, and regulation represents good law using Shepard's Citations Service; identify and flag negative treatment
• Detect non-existent or misdescribed cases; confirm quotes, holdings, and pin cites are accurate
• Assess research completeness — identify missed controlling authority and ensure multi-jurisdiction splits are properly distinguished
• Confirm the correct version of a law was in force on the relevant operative date
• Distinguish binding from persuasive authority and enforce a verify-before-finalize standard

Required Lexis+ Knowledge

• Citators: Shepard's Signal indicators (red, orange, yellow, green, blue), Depth of Discussion, overruling risk; distinguishing overruled, superseded, depublished, and distinguished-on-facts authority
• Search Methods: Terms-and-connectors (Boolean) vs. natural-language search; segment searching; Lexis Headnotes, Case Summaries, and Case Notes
• AI-Assisted Tools: Lexis+ with Protégé — litigation issue filters, Shepard's Graphical (visual case history), and Protégé natural-language search
• Secondary Sources: Matthew Bender treatises, ALR, Am. Jur., practice guides, Practical Guidance (Lexis Practice Advisor), 50-state surveys
• Statutes & Regulations: Annotated statutes/regs, version comparison, historical and effective-date versions, currentness verification
• Analytics & Records: Litigation Analytics (Lex Machina), Brief Analysis, dockets, CourtLink, PACER

Requirements

• Active, frequent use of Lexis+ — weekly or more — for substantive legal research in a current or recent professional role
• 2+ years of professional legal research experience
• Reflexive Shepard's/KeyCite proficiency; ability to spot bad cites, misstated holdings, or superseded statutes on sight
• J.D. with bar admission, MLIS/law librarian credential, or equivalent research-intensive experience
