Mathematics Expert (Master's/Ph.D.) | Contractor | Worldwide Remote

Turing is seeking advanced mathematics professionals to help improve and evaluate large language models (LLMs). This fully remote contractor role is ideal for graduate students, PhD candidates, or postdoctoral researchers in mathematics or related fields who want to apply their expertise to cutting-edge AI research while future-proofing their careers.

About Turing

Based in San Francisco, Turing is the world's leading research accelerator for frontier AI labs and a trusted partner for global enterprises deploying advanced AI systems. Turing specializes in high-quality data, advanced training pipelines, and top-tier AI research across coding, reasoning, STEM, and more.

Role Overview

In this role, you will apply advanced mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, computational thinking, and clear written communication to projects that directly improve and evaluate large language models. You will also work on computational tasks using Python and formal theorem-proving tools like Lean.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Design original, challenging mathematics problems that test LLM reasoning in multi-step, abstract, and proof-based settings.
  • Solve problems independently and write detailed, logically structured solutions with clear justifications.
  • Review model-generated solutions, identify mathematical errors or missing arguments, and provide precise feedback and corrections.
  • Contribute to defining new evaluation benchmarks spanning early undergraduate to PhD-level mathematics topics.
  • Develop and validate Python-based solutions for computational tasks using approved scientific libraries.
  • Work on theorem-prover tasks using Lean, including translating problems and proofs into formal language and verifying compilation.

Requirements

  • Analytical Skills: Strong research and analytical capabilities.
  • Feedback Skills: Ability to provide constructive, detailed annotations and corrections.
  • Creative Thinking: Lateral and creative problem-solving approach.
  • Communication: Excellent written communication and collaboration skills in a remote environment.
  • Independence: Self-motivated with the ability to work autonomously.
  • Technical Setup: Reliable desktop or laptop with a strong internet connection.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or holding a Master's, Ph.D., or Postdoctoral degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Proven ability to analyze and solve complex mathematical problems with a structured, logical approach.
  • Skilled at explaining mathematical concepts clearly using simple language, visuals, and examples.

Engagement Details

  • Commitment: Minimum 4 hours/day with at least 20 hours/week; 4 hours of overlap with PST required. Options available: 20, 30, or 40 hrs/week.
  • Type: Contractor/Freelancer assignment (no medical or paid leave benefits).

Perks

  • Fully remote, flexible work environment.
  • Opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge AI projects with leading LLM companies.
  • Potential for contract extension based on performance and project needs.
