Open Source Python Developer | $30–50/hr | Remote Worldwide

Mercor is seeking experienced Python developers with proven open-source contributions to join a high-quality, global network of engineers supporting AI, data, and software infrastructure projects. This part-time opportunity (10–20 hours per week) is designed for developers deeply engaged in the open-source ecosystem with a passion for backend architecture, performance, and reliability.

Key Domains

If you have experience in one or more of these areas, we encourage you to apply:

• Backend Development: FastAPI, Flask, Django, async I/O, RESTful API design, database integration (PostgreSQL, MongoDB)
• Open-Source Tooling: Contributions to libraries, frameworks, or infrastructure projects in Python
• DevOps & CI/CD: Automated testing, continuous integration, GitHub Actions, Docker, and container orchestration
• Data & AI Pipelines: Python-based data systems, distributed processing, or model deployment tools

Key Responsibilities

• Contribute to open-source Python repositories used by leading AI and data teams
• Design, implement, and optimize backend systems in Python for scalability and maintainability
• Collaborate asynchronously with global contributors using GitHub workflows (issues, PRs, code review)
• Ensure code quality with automated testing and documentation
• Drive best practices for modularity, type safety, and performance

Requirements

• Minimum 2+ years of professional experience in Python backend development
• Active and regular contributor to open-source repositories (verified via GitHub)
• Strong understanding of software design principles and backend architecture
• Familiarity with modern development tools (pytest, black, flake8, Docker, GitHub Actions)
• Excellent written communication and ability to work independently in a remote, asynchronous environment
