OSWorld GUI Data Annotator (Ubuntu Desktop) | Contractor | Fully Remote | 40 hrs/week

Turing is seeking detail-oriented Ubuntu desktop users to help build and refine multimodal datasets for cutting-edge AI training. This is a precision-driven, GUI-based annotation role — not a coding or engineering position. If you're patient, thorough, and highly comfortable navigating Ubuntu desktop environments, this role is for you.

About Turing

Based in San Francisco, Turing is the world's leading research accelerator for frontier AI labs and a trusted partner for global enterprises deploying advanced AI systems. Turing accelerates frontier research through high-quality data, advanced training pipelines, and top AI researchers specializing in coding, reasoning, STEM, multilinguality, multimodality, and agents.

What You'll Do

  • Replay real computer tasks inside an Ubuntu desktop environment and capture accurate screenshots at each step.
  • Interpret task instructions and text-only trajectories (Observation / Thought / Action) and recreate workflows in Ubuntu.
  • Write exact PyAutoGUI-style action JSON for each step taken.
  • Update thoughts and observations to match your captured screenshots.
  • Create new annotated tasks using existing prompts across apps like VLC, LibreOffice, GIMP, and Chrome.
  • Ensure screenshots accurately reflect the correct UI state for every step.
  • Avoid inaccurate actions (wrong coordinates, inactive buttons, incorrect app states).
  • Follow consistent file naming conventions and directory structures.
  • Flag unexpected behavior or issues using predefined guidelines.

Requirements

  • Linux/Ubuntu proficiency (mandatory): Must be comfortable using Ubuntu Desktop as a primary or secondary OS, including file management, desktop navigation, window switching, and understanding file paths.
  • Open-source application experience (required): Proficiency in Chrome, VLC Media Player, LibreOffice (Writer/Calc/Impress), GIMP, Thunderbird, and VS Code.
  • Ability to match screenshots with correct next-step actions and identify UI elements at accurate coordinates.
  • Comfortable writing simple JSON and accurate screen-state descriptions.
  • Able to generate logical, model-style thought processes that lead to the next action.
  • Patient, detail-oriented, and consistent — comfortable with repetitive step-by-step GUI work.
  • Able to follow structured annotation guidelines precisely.

This Role Is NOT For You If:

  • You are looking for a programming, research, or creative engineering role.
  • You primarily use smartphones or Windows casually.
  • You prefer high-level design or architecture work over meticulous, step-by-step tasks.

Engagement Details

  • Type: Contractor/Freelancer (no medical or paid leave)
  • Commitment: Minimum 40 hours per week
  • Time Overlap: 2–5 hours/day overlap with UTC-8:00 (America/Los_Angeles)
  • Environment: Fully remote

Perks

  • Competitive compensation based on experience and expertise.
  • Flexible working hours in a fully remote environment.
  • Opportunity to contribute to impactful AI research initiatives.
  • Potential for contract extension based on performance and project needs.

Application Process

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to complete an analytical challenge. Once the assessment is cleared, you're ready to start contributing!
