Physics STEM Expert | Contractor | Worldwide Remote

Turing is seeking a skilled Physics STEM Expert to help fine-tune and evaluate large language models (LLMs) by designing challenging physics problems and high-quality solutions. This is a fully remote contractor role ideal for graduate-level or PhD physicists looking to apply their expertise in the rapidly growing field of AI research.

About Turing

Based in San Francisco, California, Turing is the world's leading research accelerator for frontier AI labs and a trusted partner for global enterprises deploying advanced AI systems. Turing helps accelerate frontier research with high-quality data, advanced training pipelines, and top AI researchers specializing in coding, reasoning, STEM, and more.

Role Overview

In this role, you will collaborate with LLM researchers to design and solve complex physics problems that probe the limitations of large language models. You will create clear, step-by-step solutions and help define new evaluation benchmarks spanning undergraduate to PhD-level physics topics.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Design and solve challenging physics problems to evaluate and stress-test large language models.
  • Create high-quality, step-by-step solutions with well-articulated reasoning and clear explanations.
  • Collaborate with LLM researchers to align problems with evaluation goals, particularly in areas where models struggle (e.g., abstraction, multi-step reasoning, symbolic manipulation).
  • Help define new evaluation benchmarks based on physics curricula from early undergraduate to PhD-level topics.

Requirements

  • Analytical Skills: Strong research and analytical capabilities.
  • Feedback Skills: Ability to provide constructive feedback and detailed annotations.
  • Creative Thinking: Lateral and creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Communication: Excellent structured communication and collaboration skills in a remote environment.
  • Independence: Self-motivated with the ability to work autonomously.
  • Technical Setup: Reliable desktop or laptop with a strong internet connection.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's, Ph.D., or Postdoctoral degree in Physics, Applied Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve complex physics problems with a structured, logical approach.
  • Ability to explain physics concepts clearly using simple language, visuals, and sound physical reasoning.

Engagement Details

  • Commitment: Minimum 4 hours per day, up to 40 hours per week, with at least 4 hours of overlap with PST.
  • Engagement Type: Contractor

Evaluation Process

  • Shortlisted candidates will receive a Job Interest Form.
  • After profile review, an assessment will be shared and must be completed within 24 hours.
  • Candidates who pass the assessment will be contacted to schedule an interview.
