Quantum Physics Expert | $73.29/hr | Remote (US, UK, Canada, EU)

Join Mercor in shaping the future of AI by evaluating and improving how conversational AI systems understand and explain complex physics concepts. This flexible contract role allows PhD-level physicists to apply their expertise in quantum physics to enhance AI model performance and reliability.

Why This Role Exists

Mercor partners with leading AI teams to improve general-purpose conversational AI systems used across everyday and professional scenarios. In physics contexts, these systems must demonstrate strong theoretical grounding, quantitative rigor, and precise reasoning. You'll play a critical role in ensuring AI models explain physics concepts with accuracy and clarity.

What You'll Do

  • Write and refine prompts to guide AI model behavior in physics contexts
  • Evaluate LLM-generated responses for conceptual accuracy, mathematical correctness, and reasoning quality
  • Conduct fact-checking using authoritative sources and domain expertise
  • Annotate model responses by identifying strengths, weaknesses, and inaccuracies
  • Assess clarity, structure, and appropriateness of explanations for diverse audiences
  • Ensure model responses align with conversational standards and system guidelines
  • Apply consistent evaluation standards using taxonomies, benchmarks, and detailed guidelines

Who You Are

  • PhD in Physics or closely related field (required)
  • Demonstrated expertise in Quantum Physics
  • May also have experience in: Electromagnetism, Optics & Signals; Thermodynamics & Statistical Physics; Classical Mechanics & Dynamics; or Relativity, Cosmology & High-Energy Physics
  • Significant experience using large language models (LLMs) and understanding their applications
  • Excellent writing skills with ability to explain complex physics concepts clearly
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify subtle issues
  • Experience reviewing or editing technical or academic writing

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

  • Prior experience with RLHF, model evaluation, or data annotation
  • Teaching or mentoring experience explaining physics to non-expert audiences
  • Familiarity with evaluation rubrics, benchmarks, or structured review frameworks

What Success Looks Like

  • Identifying conceptual inaccuracies and weak reasoning in physics-related AI outputs
  • Delivering feedback that improves rigor, clarity, and correctness of AI explanations
  • Producing consistent, reproducible evaluation artifacts that strengthen model performance
  • Contributing to AI systems that users trust for physics-related queries

Why Join Mercor

This flexible, remote role offers PhD-level scientists the opportunity to directly influence how advanced AI systems reason about complex scientific concepts. Apply your deep expertise beyond academia while contributing to high-impact AI development work that shapes the future of conversational AI.

Full-time or part-time contract work available. Fluent English required.

How to apply for this role
  • Upload your resume — keep it up-to-date and in English. Mercor will auto-fill your profile from it.
