Scientific Computing Specialist | Contractor | 5-Week Engagement | Worldwide Remote

Turing is seeking a Computational Physicist / Physical Simulation Specialist to help build benchmark environments used to evaluate frontier AI models on real-world scientific and engineering software. This is a short-term, high-impact contractor role where your domain expertise directly shapes how AI systems are tested and validated.

About Turing

Based in San Francisco, Turing is the world's leading research accelerator for frontier AI labs and a trusted partner for global enterprises deploying advanced AI. Turing accelerates frontier research through high-quality data, advanced training pipelines, and top-tier AI researchers specializing in coding, reasoning, STEM, multilinguality, and more.

Role Overview

You will design and build templates — the reusable foundations that define what a scientific application can do and what realistic task material looks like. These templates are used to generate many AI benchmark tasks, so accuracy, internal consistency, and domain authenticity are critical.

Key Responsibilities

  • Application Capability Mapping: Document an application's real capabilities — supported input types, meaningful operations, and export formats — in a structured form the broader team can build on.
  • Environment Base Assets: Produce realistic, internally consistent simulation assets, including:
    • Gaussian input/log files
    • OpenFOAM case dictionaries (controlDict, fvSchemes)
    • WRF namelist.input decks
    • FITS astronomical image files
    • SAC seismic trace files
    • NetCDF climate datasets
  • Reference Solutions: Complete domain tasks on record to demonstrate human achievability and establish a clear standard for correctness. Note: You define what correct means — engineers handle the scoring implementation.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Physicist specializing in Modelling & Simulation
  • Professional expertise in computational physics, thermofluids, seismology, or atmospheric modeling — you have run real physics simulations, not merely operated software
  • Hands-on experience with at least one of: Gaussian, OpenFOAM, SU2, Elmer FEM, or WRF (mandatory)
  • Strong understanding of differential equations, boundary conditions, wave propagation, and solver convergence tolerances
  • Ability to explain why a physical boundary condition or simulation result is correct, not just that it is
  • Clear, professional written English

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ObsPy, SeisComP, SAOImage DS9, or NetCDF data tools (CDO/NCO)
  • Python scripting for simulation input-deck generation and post-processing

Engagement Details

  • Commitment: 40 hours/week with at least 4 hours of PST overlap daily
  • Employment Type: Contractor assignment (no medical/paid leave benefits)
  • Duration: 5 weeks with immediate onboarding
  • Environment: Fully remote, flexible working hours
