Senior Backend Engineer (Python/FastAPI) | AI Evaluation | US Remote | Contractor (10–40 hrs/week)

Join Turing — the world's leading AI research accelerator — and help shape the future of large language models by evaluating and curating high-quality software engineering datasets. This flexible contractor role is ideal for experienced backend engineers passionate about AI and systems-level development.

About Turing

Based in San Francisco, Turing partners with frontier AI labs and global enterprises to accelerate AI research and deploy reliable, high-impact AI systems. Our work spans advanced training pipelines, AI evaluation, and enterprise AI transformation.

Role Overview

As a Software Engineering Evaluator, you will create and refine datasets used to train, benchmark, and advance large language models. You'll collaborate closely with researchers to curate code examples, build precise solutions, and evaluate AI-generated code across multiple languages — with a strong emphasis on systems-level correctness, performance, and scalability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Curate and correct code examples in Python, C/C++, Rust, Go, Java, and JavaScript (including ReactJS) for AI model training initiatives.
  • Evaluate and refine AI-generated code for efficiency, reliability, and systems-level correctness.
  • Build agents to verify the quality of infrastructure and systems-level code and identify error patterns.
  • Design automated verification mechanisms for software engineering tasks.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to benchmark and improve AI-driven coding solutions.
  • Analyze and hypothesize on software engineering lifecycle stages — from prototyping and architecture design to production, monitoring, and maintenance.

Required Skills

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong expertise in systems programming, infrastructure, or backend development (Python, C/C++, Rust, Go).
  • Proven experience building and deploying scalable, production-grade software.
  • Deep understanding of software architecture, design patterns, debugging, and code quality assessment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for structured, clear evaluation rationales.

Ideal Background

Experience at frontier AI or technology organizations (e.g., OpenAI, NVIDIA, Databricks, Palantir, Snowflake) is highly valued. Graduates from top-tier programs are welcome, though exceptional skill and experience always take precedence over pedigree.

Engagement Details

  • Type: Contractor (no medical/paid leave benefits)
  • Commitment: Flexible — minimum 10 hrs/week, up to 40 hrs/week
  • Duration: 1 month, with potential extensions based on performance
  • Location: Must be based in the United States

Application Process

The application takes approximately 15–30 minutes and includes an AI video interview. Apply today to contribute to cutting-edge AI research at Turing.
