Senior/Staff Software Engineer (Python/C++ + Excel COM Automation) | Full Time | Remote in US

Turing is seeking a highly skilled Senior or Staff Software Engineer with deep Python/C++ backend expertise and specialized experience in server-side Microsoft Excel COM automation. You'll help build a production-grade Excel execution engine for a Fortune 500 financial-services client — a technically challenging, high-impact role at one of the world's fastest-growing AI companies.

About Turing

Turing accelerates the advancement and deployment of powerful AI systems. We partner with leading AI labs to push frontier model capabilities and build real-world AI solutions for mission-critical enterprise challenges.

About the Role

You will design and operate a server-side Excel execution engine that programmatically opens macro-heavy, add-in-dependent valuation workbooks on Windows, allows proprietary and third-party COM add-ins (e.g., Capital IQ) to recalculate, captures structured results, and safely versions them back to cloud storage. This role demands both strong backend engineering and genuine hands-on experience taming Excel + COM add-ins at scale.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate production-grade backend services in Python — clean, tested, observable, and maintainable.
  • Own the Excel execution engine: open workbooks, resolve add-ins, invoke approved actions, recalculate, and capture structured output with provenance.
  • Design interactive, session-isolated Windows/Excel workers that preserve COM add-in behavior across concurrent runs.
  • Orchestrate a worker pool with queues, scheduling, retries, and idempotency to reliably process hundreds of workbooks.
  • Validate outputs for completeness, integrity, and correctness before results are trusted or written back.
  • Engineer for capacity: size and tune the worker pool for monthly-close volume windows through load/soak testing and bottleneck analysis.
  • Collaborate with Solution Architects and DevOps on VM imaging, scaling, deployment, and documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • 8–13 years of professional software engineering with strong Python expertise.
  • Proven experience building and operating complex production backend services and APIs.
  • Strong fundamentals in concurrency, data structures, debugging, and performance optimization.
  • Comfortable across the stack: storage, queues, cloud, CI/CD, legacy and modern systems.
  • Deep, hands-on experience automating desktop Excel via COM/Office interop in unattended server environments.
  • Experience running macro-heavy workbooks and third-party COM/Office add-ins programmatically, including recalculation and add-in authentication.
  • Demonstrated ability to make unreliable desktop-Office stacks dependable through failure recovery, output validation, and capacity engineering.

Nice to Have

  • Domain exposure to financial services, asset management, or buy-side valuation workflows.
  • Experience reading/maintaining VBA macros; VSTO / .NET Office interop.
  • Direct experience with vendor add-ins: Capital IQ, Bloomberg, FactSet, MSCI, or similar.
  • RPA familiarity (UiPath, Power Automate) for UI-level automation fallback scenarios.
  • Observability (OpenTelemetry), IaC (Terraform), containerization, and Azure experience.
  • Delivery experience in regulated or audited environments (access control, change control, audit evidence).
