Software Engineer, Backend
Salary: $255,000 - $405,000 per year, plus equity

We’re seeking experienced backend engineers passionate about solving challenging problems to help scale our products and infrastructure. As OpenAI expands, your role will be crucial in building robust systems that reliably serve millions of global users.
You'll work collaboratively in a dynamic environment, continuously iterating on solutions to ensure high reliability, scalability, and user satisfaction.
Architect and implement scalable and secure platforms supporting ChatGPT’s development and production environments.
Collaborate closely with researchers, engineers, product managers, and designers to launch innovative features and new research outcomes.
Enhance engineering efficiency by developing and maintaining tools and infrastructure.
Participate in an on-call rotation, contributing to system reliability and incident response.
Proven experience designing, building, and scaling production-level backend systems.
Deep commitment to delivering excellent user experiences through robust engineering solutions.
Collaborative mindset, actively contributing to team success and openly sharing knowledge.
Strong problem-solving skills, taking full ownership of challenges and proactively filling knowledge gaps.
Experience creating custom tools when off-the-shelf solutions fall short.
Previous startup experience, either as a founder or early engineer, is highly valuable.
