Software Engineer III | $80–110/hr | Menlo Park, CA

Join a dynamic legal department as a Software Engineer III, where you'll build internal tools, automate workflows, and establish technical best practices. This role is perfect for detail-oriented engineers who thrive in collaborative environments with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What You'll Do:

  • Design, develop, and maintain full-stack internal tools to streamline legal department workflows and boost operational efficiency
  • Automate processes using modern programming languages and frameworks including Python, JavaScript, and Hack
  • Build and enhance backend systems supporting data management and operational requirements
  • Establish technical best practices for software development, covering code quality, security, and scalability
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners including attorneys, Data Science, and Data Engineering teams to gather requirements and provide technical guidance
  • Create comprehensive internal documentation for tools, systems, and workflows to ensure knowledge continuity
  • Stay current on emerging technologies and help non-technical partners understand system capabilities and limitations
  • Develop and maintain monitoring and alerting systems, participate in on-call rotations, and resolve issues promptly

Required Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience (8+ years preferred)
  • Expert-level proficiency in C++, C, Java, Hack, or equivalent non-pythonic language (Java and PHP strongly preferred)
  • Expert-level Python programming skills
  • Proven experience developing command-line interfaces and shell scripts (Bash) in Unix/Linux environments
  • Strong self-starter with excellent collaboration skills and experience leading cross-functional tooling projects with minimal oversight
  • Experience serving as a technical liaison, translating business requirements into technical specifications for non-technical stakeholders
  • Solid background in QA testing methodologies
  • Exceptional organizational skills and documentation abilities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical documentation and incident reporting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • West Coast-based with interest in occasional San Francisco office visits (fully remote acceptable)
  • Experience building enterprise web applications and internal tools end-to-end
  • Background in legal, privacy, or security-related projects
