About the Role
Mercor is partnering with top AI research teams to build chemistry-savvy foundational models. As an Undergraduate Chemistry Expert, you’ll validate and enhance AI-generated solutions—ensuring accuracy, rigor, and real-world relevance across theoretical and applied chemistry.
What You’ll Do
Model Training & Validation
Critically evaluate AI-generated reaction mechanisms, chemical equations, and computational outputs
Verify accuracy of reaction pathways, spectroscopic interpretations, and thermodynamic/kinetic calculations
Identify and correct errors in notation, stoichiometry, molecular structures, and units
Content Development & Feedback
Design chemistry training scenarios from basic stoichiometry through graduate-level reaction design
Cross-check AI outputs against authoritative sources (ACS journals, NIST Chemistry WebBook, J. Chem. Ed.)
Provide clear, methodical feedback on problem-solving approaches and experimental protocols
Collaboration & Iteration
Partner with AI scientists to align training data with real-world challenges (e.g., drug synthesis, materials discovery)
Tailor explanations and problem sets for audiences ranging from undergraduates to advanced researchers
Key Domains
Core Disciplines: General, Organic, Inorganic Chemistry
Theoretical & Computational: Physical Chemistry, Quantum Chemistry, Thermodynamics
Analytical & Applied: Analytical Chemistry, Solid-State Chemistry, Electrochemistry
Specialized Areas: Polymer Chemistry, Nanochemistry, Computational Chemistry, Green Chemistry
Ideal Qualifications
Bachelor’s (or in-progress) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or closely related field (U.S./Canadian institution)
Strong foundation in reaction mechanisms, thermodynamics, kinetics, and spectroscopy
Exceptional attention to detail in IUPAC nomenclature, chemical notation, and unit consistency
Clear, concise written and verbal communication skills
Teaching, tutoring, or competition (e.g., Chemistry Olympiad) experience is a plus
Availability for 20–40 hours/week over a 1–4-week engagement
