General Clinician (MD/DO) – AI Expert Pool | $150/hr | Worldwide Remote

Mercor is seeking residency-trained physicians across all specialties to join a shared expert pool focused on developing and evaluating clinical AI systems. This is a non-clinical, remote contractor role — no patient care, no live diagnosis — just your clinical expertise applied to shaping how AI systems are built and measured.

About the Role

After onboarding, you'll be matched to one or more concurrent clinical workstreams based on your specialty, availability, and interest. You may move between streams as priorities shift, giving you flexibility and variety in your work.

What You'll Work On

  • Grading Criteria Development: Break down clinical questions into discrete, checkable criteria for consistent model evaluation.
  • Clinical Dialogue Evaluation: Review multi-turn clinical conversations for accuracy, safety, completeness, and appropriate escalation advice.
  • Clinical Reasoning Annotation: Document your full diagnostic reasoning process, including differentials considered and rejected.
  • Output Review: Identify hallucinated findings, dangerous omissions, unsupported certainty, and clinically unsafe advice.
  • Guideline Authoring: Define edge cases and standards of care to ensure annotation consistency across large clinician groups.
  • Difficult-Case Writing: Construct clinical questions that probe the limits of current AI reasoning.

Task length varies by stream — roughly 45 minutes for dialogue evaluations, up to an hour or more for grading-criteria authoring.

Required Qualifications

  • MD or DO with a completed residency in any specialty
  • Active, unrestricted medical license in your country of practice
  • 3+ years of post-residency clinical experience (current or prior practice)
  • Ability to write structured clinical rationale accessible to non-specialist reviewers
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Availability of minimum 20 hours per week, with flexibility to concentrate hours during time-boxed workstreams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board certification in your specialty
  • U.S. medical licensure and familiarity with U.S. standards of care
  • Background in primary care, internal medicine, emergency medicine, or hospital medicine
  • Prior experience in clinical annotation, AI evaluation, medical education, or question writing
  • Experience in grading-criteria design, resident assessment, or clinical guideline development
  • Published research or sustained technical writing (samples welcome)

Why This Work Matters

Most clinical AI failures stem from ordinary questions answered with misplaced confidence — not exotic edge cases. Catching these failures requires someone who has genuinely carried clinical responsibility. The standards these systems are held to are written by physicians. Here, you would be writing them.

How to apply for this role
  • Upload your resume — keep it up-to-date and in English. Mercor will auto-fill your profile from it.
  • Complete the AI interview — a 15-minute conversation about your experience. Be ready to discuss specific projects and challenges you've solved.
  • Submit your application — only about 20% of applicants finish all the steps, so completing yours puts you well ahead.
