Hazardous Device Specialist / Public Safety Professional | $65–75/hr | Worldwide Remote

Mercor is assembling a panel of energetic materials and public safety experts to evaluate and red-team frontier AI models. This task-based, remote engagement is ideal for certified bomb technicians, military EOD professionals, or CBRNE specialists who can reliably distinguish routine professional inquiries from genuinely dangerous ones.

What You'll Do

  • Author challenging single-turn prompts across three classification levels: benign, dual-use, and adversarial
  • Evaluate AI-generated responses against a defined policy standard, judging whether each was handled appropriately
  • Write reference answers that demonstrate correct responses and provide clear technical reasoning accessible to non-specialists

Ideal Background

We're seeking public safety professionals with hands-on experience assessing real devices — particularly those with render-safe and post-incident expertise held under certification and command accountability. Relevant backgrounds include:

  • Certified bomb technician or hazardous device operator
  • Military EOD with civilian public-safety or training experience
  • Bomb squad commander or training officer
  • Post-blast investigation and device reconstruction specialist
  • CBRNE technical response professional (standoff assessment, robotics, disruption tools)

Beyond Technical Expertise

This is a writing-intensive role. Every judgment requires a written rationale that a non-specialist can follow. Prior technical writing, published research, or expert witness experience is strongly valued — please include a writing sample or link in your application.

Important Notes

  • Work must not draw on classified, export-controlled, or NDA-protected information. If you hold such obligations, note them in your application and we will scope accordingly.
  • You will be engaging with misuse scenarios in your field. Full briefings are provided in advance, and you may pause or step away at any time without penalty.

How to apply for this role
  • Upload your resume — keep it up-to-date and in English. Mercor will auto-fill your profile from it.
  • Complete the AI interview — a 15-minute conversation about your experience. Be ready to discuss specific projects and challenges you've solved.
  • Submit your application — only about 20% of applicants finish all the steps, so completing yours puts you well ahead.
