Transcriptionist (African & Afrikaans Accents) at Mercor

Accent-specialist Transcriptionist | $15-20/hr | Remote, short-term hourly contract

Mercor is hiring on behalf of a leading AI company for transcription specialists who can confidently work with African-accented English. You will produce accurate, timestamped transcriptions of recorded conversations used to build and evaluate AI voice agents.

Two Accent Groups, One Application

This posting covers two accent groups. Apply once, and a quick question in the application will confirm which you fit:

• African-accented English (e.g. Nigerian, Kenyan, Ghanaian, Tanzanian, South African)
• Afrikaans-accented English — requires Afrikaans fluency

What You'll Do

• Transcribe recorded English conversations spoken with an African or Afrikaans accent
• Create accurate timestamps against the audio
• Apply a consistent transcription convention across a batch of files
• Flag audio quality issues, unclear speech, and speaker-attribution problems
• Potentially help produce conversations for subsequent transcription

Requirements

• Prior transcription or transcription-QA experience (professional or freelance)
• Able to confidently understand and accurately transcribe the accents you apply for
• For the Afrikaans group: fluent in Afrikaans
• Strong attention to detail and consistency across a batch
• Reliable internet and the ability to work to a short deadline
• Available to start immediately

Nice to Have

• Experience with timestamping, captioning, or subtitling workflows
• Data annotation or AI-training data experience

Pay and Schedule

• $15-20/hr, remote, hourly contract
• Approximately 20 hours of work, with the possibility of more
• Duration: 1-2 weeks
